Mount Road Sangam
Our Story Since 1973
Five decades of heritage, one unwavering commitment — to cook with honesty and serve with heart.
Our Journey
Five Decades, One Family
The Founding
Mohammed Abdul Kareem opens a modest dhaba on Mount Road with a clay oven, a handful of Hyderabadi recipes passed down by his grandmother, and a dream to feed Chennai.
The Biryani Legacy
Word of the Dum Biryani spreads through Madras. The restaurant expands its seating and adds the iconic Haleem and Nihari to the menu, cementing its status as a city institution.
Menu Expansion
A dedicated tandoor section is added. Over 60 new dishes — from kebabs to biryanis — bring flavours of Lucknow and Old Delhi to the city's heart.
Second Generation
Sons Imran and Faisal take over operations, modernising the kitchen while staying fiercely loyal to the original recipes. The restaurant receives its first food-media feature.
Charminar Bakes
The dessert and bakery sub-brand Charminar Bakes is launched, offering Osmania biscuits, Shahi Tukda, and artisanal Hyderabadi sweets loved by all of Chennai.
Flip Diner & Digital Era
Flip Diner, a fast-casual wing, opens inside the premises. Online ordering, digital menus, and delivery partnerships bring Sangam to every corner of the city.

Heritage & Identity
The Hyderabad Connection
Long before the age of food delivery apps and restaurant chains, Hyderabadi cuisine was a closely guarded family tradition — spices sourced from Laad Bazaar, slow-cooked in clay pots over open wood fires, reserved for weddings and celebrations in the old city's grand havelis.
When Mohammed Abdul Kareem migrated to Chennai in the early 1970s, he carried with him the flavours of that old city. Mount Road — then still Madras's commercial spine — was a city in transition, hungry for something new. Kareem's simple biryani, cooked in the traditional dum style with whole spices, saffron, and long-grain Basmati, was unlike anything the city had tasted.
The secret, he would say, was patience. The biryani is sealed with dough, cooked on slow heat for nearly three hours, and only opened at the table. That ritual — the lift of the lid, the cloud of saffron-scented steam — remains unchanged to this day. Fifty years on, we still cook it the same way. Some traditions are too good to improve.
